We’ve all heard of Comic-Con and other conventions designed to provide a place for people interested in similar topics to learn, connect and inspire.
However, there is one convention like this that you may not have heard of. It’s called Cancer Con. An annual event designed to educate and connect adolescent and young adult cancer patients and survivors.
The 4-day convention was held in Denver, CO this year, and Empire Beauty School students and staff volunteered their time and talents at the event.
Brittany Staudt, Career Planning Specialist at Empire Beauty School in Thornton, CO, organized Empire’s participation in the event.
Close to 30 Empire students from all 3 Denver area campuses volunteered over their weekend to do makeup applications, clipper cuts and hairstyles for cancer survivors and their families.
“In just one day, our students provided services to more than 110 people.”, says Brittany. “We were happy to provide the services, but most importantly, we were thrilled to be able to talk with cancer survivors and their families. We cried with them, we laughed with them, it was such a great learning opportunity. It really teaches our student about the power they have when a guest sits in their chair. They can affect people in a very positive way.”
In addition to providing the beauty services at the event, Empire students raised money to donate to the cause. In total, they raised more than $700 that will go toward keeping the event going into 2018.
Cancer Con is a branch of Stupid Cancer™, a charity that addresses young adult cancer through advocacy, research, mobile health, and social media. Events like Cancer Con help bring “cancer under 40” to the national spotlight and provide meaningful support and awareness to this group.
