Alexis Snyder is a student at Empire Beauty School in Manhattan who was encouraged to apply for a scholarship from Beauty Changes Lives. Upon completing the submission process, Snyder was informed that she would be awarded the $5,000 scholarship. In addition to this scholarship, Snyder was invited to share her story on an all-inclusive trip to Chicago to speak at a convention and raise funds for Beauty Changes Lives. The scholarship was from Moroccan oil through Beauty Changes Lives. With the help of Snyder and the other candidates, they raised over $100,000.
“I joined cosmetology because I’ve always loved doing hair and I started on myself, mixing colors, seeing what would go with each other, and then I’m like what if I did this for a living.”
From the moment she stepped into an Empire Beauty School, she was told “you are the epitome of a cosmetology student, you belong here.” These were words that Snyder was never told before.
“As soon as I started, doors kept opening after one another and that cemented that this is what I was supposed to be doing. With Beauty School, I just show up and put my heart into it, and the results are phenomenal. My favorite aspect of cosmetology is definitely hair coloring. I just love vivid colors. It is pure art, it’s just like painting like Picasso.”
Snyder dares to be different, understanding that even if the students at the school all look completely different, they share that same passion. By attending this convention in Chicago, Snyder was able to make connections with those who are passionate about the beauty industry.
“Winning this award, cemented that I was meant to be doing this and this is where I was meant to be. I never received that kind of validation before. It felt amazing.”
Snyder has been a student at Empire Beauty School in Manhattan, New York since September of 2021 with graduation soon approaching.
“Empire Beauty School has helped me further my education. I learned all the basics I need to pass boards and I am completely confident with passing boards. They helped me gain a basic level of knowledge for when I start as an assistant full-time I’m not just going in blind. I know the basics of how to get to point a to point b. It takes courage but you have to follow your heart. Use that fear as fuel and let your heart guide you. If it is meant for you, it will happen. ”
Mr. Oleson Roberto (also, referred to as Mr. O), Empire educator, has been with Snyder since the beginning of her journey and continues to support her throughout all of her endeavors.
“She proved to all of us this is where she belongs. That scholarship and everything she has been trying to achieve, she’s going to get it. That’s why I tell her all the time, don’t stop, you’re going to get it because you proved to me already that you’re going to get all of this. Whatever you want to get done will happen. She is a person that will fight for whatever, in this industry you have to be like that. I celebrated for her as if she was my daughter. When you see students achieving all of that, that is what makes you feel like you are doing your part.”
