Janis Joplin, Cher and Pat Benetar are among the greatest leading ladies of music, helping to mold the trends and fashions of their decade. Whether it be the singing USO girls with their bright red lips and swoon-worthy victory rolls or Britney Spears and her doe eyed makeup and school-girl pigtails, women on stage have set the standard for fashion and beauty.
Here are some of our non-conventional picks for top style icons within each decade and a humorous take on both men and women’s melodious fashion for each era.
Beyonce
Vocal powerhouse Beyonce may have started out as a fresh faced subtle beauty in Destiny’s Child, but her style evolution is nothing short of astonishing. Effortlessly transitioning from long flowy locks in 2014 to a short bouncy bob in 2015 this diva proves she can look great in anything.
Pink
In early 2000 Pink screamed onto the scene with her gritty lyrics and short, pink, punk rock hair sending edgy teen girls everywhere to the grocery store for kool-aid. Pink’s hairstyle may not have changed much over the years but her haircolor has blossomed into a beautifully refined classic blonde.
Courtney Love
Many would argue that Gwen Stefani holds the monopoly on style for the 1990’s but I would dare to call on Courtney Love to be our Queen of 90’s grunge. Like her husband Kurt Cobain, Courtney wore her hair bleached blonde, shoulder-length, tousled and messy.
Siouxsie Sioux
Hailed as one of the most influential British rock stars of all time Siouxsie from Siouxsie and the Banshees made unruly hair chic. Teased, back combed and crimped became the gothic go-to style of the era thanks to this rocker chick.
Debbie Harry
Decades before ombré was trending, there was Blondie’s singer Debbie Harry’s trendsetting two-toned blonde hair. This lead bombshell wore her hair in a long layered bob style with bangs over her perfectly shaped eyebrows. Harry is also known for her daring fashion choices like wearing clashing patterns and graphic tees. Her style can still be seen in today’s fashion.
Diana Ross
Diana Ross’ iconic style spans many decades, from her large roller set bouffant wigs and sky high beehives of the 1960s to embracing her naturally curly hair in the 70s. Ross’ glittery attire, spidery lashes and bright red lipstick disco’d their way into our style books.
Billie Holiday
Aside from her mind blowing jazz vocals, Billie holiday was best known for her overstated hair accessories. Holiday was often seen with giant flowers pinned behind her ear and statement jewelry on her neck.
Ella Fitzgerald
Crooning queen Ella Fitzgerald would often be seen wearing her long hair up in a neat twist, with loose curls spilling forward. As a natural beauty, she preferred to wear very little makeup and focused mainly on choosing a strong lip color.
