It seems the 80’s trend will be hanging around well into the Fall 2012/Winter 2013 season. Designers like Balenciaga were showing “space-aged materials” and shoulder padded shirts, and everyone on the Yves Saint Laurent Fall 2012 catwalk looked like they were ‘Addicted to Love’. When you walk into H&M or Forever 21 you feel like you are walking into the home for displaced Wham! fans. No doubt, we are still in love with the 80’s.
As with any trend, you have to edit the look so it fits in with your personal style. As I have said before, I believe that make-up is the best place to incorporate a new trend into your routine. So here are some great ways to bring the 80’s Back to the Future.
– Violet Blush: For quite a few seasons we have been looking at a soft flush
of peach and pink for our cheeks. A violet blush looks takes on the futuristic look that was the hallmark of so much of the 80’s fashion. There is no need to go full-on Blade Runner with an unblended stripe up your cheekbone (unless you are going for the android look…and that is awesome too), but a stronger blush line will give your look a little kick. Violet blush is surprisingly wearable for skin of all colors. Just remember, the darker your skin, the more vivid you can go.
– Colored Mascara: For the daring, blue mascara with a matching blue liner is bright and modern. I love wearing emerald green mascara and emerald green liner with my dark brown eyes, it gives my look an unexpected edge. For the less daring, navy blue or eggplant mascara can give your eyes some extra sparkle. Navy blue makes the whites of your eyes look whiter and is universally flattering, while eggplant colored mascara makes any green tones in your eyes stand out.
– The Robert Palmer Girl: Now, there is no need to go full on plastic for this; however, a slicked back pony with a strong lip and lightly mattified skin will be so on-trend for the fall. The look is easy and sophisticated.
-Heavy Metal: For those of us who still want to look like something the cat dragged in, a smokey eye done with metallic
eyeshadows will give you some unexpected glam. Also, don’t be shy; we want to see your glittered lashes too!!
Whether you like your make-up theatrical, modern, or subdued there is an aspect of the 80’s trend that you can use. If you want to go all out android…do it (and please send pictures)! If you want to just incorporate a colored liner into your look…go for it! Make-up is fun and expressive and only limited by your attitude. Unless, of course, we are talking about unblended foundation…that is just flat out wrong!
