Magic in Makeup: Which Student will Put Their “Best Face” Forward?
Makeup is fascinating to everyone because it’s truly magical. Think about the transformations it makes! This is an intricate, difficult art, and the public just goes crazy for the famous “before and after” looks that are created. Who has not said at one time “ugh, I need a makeover!”? You’re all nodding right now, aren’t you?
Well then, who performs these transitional masterpieces? A skilled makeup artist does! A cosmetology student or seasoned makeup master takes a plain palette- a bare face- and designs works of art on skin to beautify or portray a vision. It’s no wonder that Oscar’s red carpet rolled out 30 years of Academy Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Makeup. It’s a talent that’s absolutely award-worthy.
Well look out, Hollywood! There soon will be hundreds of talented Empire Beauty School Cosmetology and Esthetics students competing for national awards in Makeup Artistry (and more) at Future Professional Expo and Hair Show 2012, a high-energy, emotionally-charged annual event in Hershey, PA, May 19-21.
This year’s challenge: The student artists must carry out a “Fashion Week” style makeup look (nymag.com/fashion) on a live model in 60 minutes! Wow-competition, drama, timed events, and fabulous prizes. Just like a reality TV show, only better!

Fashion Week style is a great choice as it prepares students for all the in-demand looks and techniques that future employment in fashion makeup artistry requires. The finished look is to resemble those found on the cover of modern trade publications. Fun stuff! The model’s hair must work as an enhancement for the makeup, but can’t be a distraction. This blends the best of two cosmetology worlds, hair and makeup. Talk about a win-win!
2011 Winners for Fantasy Makeup Art
These hard-working Empire students are living the dream. As they are motivated by huge cheering crowds, appear on big screens (Hollywood prep!), live webcasts, and get much publicity, they are doing what they love to do. Think about it- inspired student stars, putting high-fashion makeup on live models in a national showcase. Nothing gets quite better than that in cosmetology school.
Our love of makeup makes this a must-see. Even if some of the looks aren’t suited for street wear (although some daring folks may give it a whirl) the art and creativity here is amazing. Even the judges loved it! A former judge wrote about her great experience here: Judging Makeup Artistry at FPE.
This year, we’re sure to spot plenty of runway-ready student models all decked out in their fashion makeup created by Empire’s own imaginative makeup artists. There’s no need for makeovers during Hershey’s own Fashion Week. Keep the magic going…Oscar’s red carpet awaits!
Note: Of course, all of the competitions at the Future Professional Expo imaginative are creative and artistic, 13 in all (6 live events).The student talent on display is spectacular. It’s a matter of choice to pick your favorite!
