June 5, 2009
Empire Beauty School in Grand Rapids was featured in the WZZM13.comarticle, “Unemployed choosing ‘new’ careers.” The article begins by stating that many people are pursuing new careers as a result of the high unemployment rate. “Just one of the jobs listed as being one of the best jobs for 2009 is cosmetology.” The article uses the examples of two people who were laid off and then went to beauty school to pursue their dream jobs in the beauty industry.
Interviewed for the article, Chris Fassbender spent 12 years as a salesman, got laid off and, at age 43, is a student at Empire Beauty School in Grand Rapids. A manager in retail sales until she got laid off, 39-year-old Tammy Giles had “always been interested in cosmetology.” She had “also been told that there will always be” beauty jobs. She said that “Everyone wants to look good. You save your money, even in hard times and you spend it on what you think is important.” For some people, the article says, “that might be a haircut or a manicure.”
