You may have noticed this trend on the runways in the last couple of seasons. And, it’s finally hitting the streets in the form of affordable lip colors (that make you smile without knowing it). Matte lipstick is taking over – or at least giving heavy gloss a run for its money. Here’s how you can get in on this trend.
Matte lipsticks add a different layer of depth to your finished face than a gloss finish. But, it can be overpowering if you overdo the matte look on your face. That said, you can often get away with colors you would normally avoid (such as purples and darker shades) as matte doesn’t have the harshness of gloss.
When choosing a matte lipstick, try to find products that say moisture (or a derivative) on the package. It can be a drying product and any help to avoid that is welcome.
With matte lipsticks, you’ll see flaws quickly. That includes chapped lips. While you should always care for your lips to avoid chapping, a sugar scrub will go a long way before applying matte lipstick.
When your lips are smooth, protect them from drying products with a heavy coat of lip balm.
As a bonus, you don’t need any lip liner when wearing matte lipstick; it just won’t run the way hi-gloss products will.
When applying matte lipsticks, work from the middle out. Use a brush if you have one and are skilled at using it. Alternatively, you can press your lips together gently to push lipstick into the corners.
Blot with a tissue (and take care of any spludges) before applying a second coat.
The key to pulling off the matte lipstick look is to avoid an overly matted face. Keep the rest of your look natural, dewy, and fresh. A dash of light rosy color on the cheeks may be all it takes.
