There seems to be a trend geared towards attending beauty school online.  We’re not pointing any fingers, but we think that some Universities have made online education the thing to do.  Truthfully, until a few years ago, it wasn’t quite accepted to obtain any kind of college degree online.  While the tables may be turning in some fields of study, ask yourself: Can you learn to cut hair on line?

Beauty school is designed to help you learn the necessary skills you need to cut, color and style hair.  You study for about a year to be able to pass an exam and obtain your cosmetology license.  The exam is designed by the state.  You must have a cosmetology license to be able to cut hair.  Here’s the thing: While you might be able to learn to pass the exam by studying online, cosmetology is a people business.  You make a living by interacting with your clients and doing their hair.  You can’t learn the skills you need to cut hair in front of a computer.

The other kicker is our hands on student salon. Empire Beauty School has a student salon.  After you take a few classes, under the close supervision of your teacher, you’ll practice on real people.  You will see real clients. You’ll cut, um, real hair.  You will practice shampooing and techniques like layering or razoring.  You absolutely cannot learn to cut hair from a computer screen.  A computer cannot teach you how to hold scissors.  It also won’t give you the extra tips you may need, like how to hold the comb and hair dryer at the same time.  These factors might not seem like a big deal, but we guarantee your employer will want you to know how to cut hair.  The best way to learn to do this is by practicing, again and again, on the clients at our student salon.

Once you have finished beauty school, you may want to advance your beauty career.  There are some courses available on line for you to advance your beauty education.  You might study coloring techniques more in depth.  Otherwise, you could brush up on trendy men’s cuts.  For those add ons, the technique may be taught in an online course.  First, though, let’s make sure you get your cosmetology license and finish beauty school.

Oh, if you’re one of many students that attended an online course to enhance their beauty career, tell us about it. Who did you use? What school did you go through? How did a computer work in teaching you a new technique?
