Top 3 High School Classes to Prepare You for Beauty School

by Lori Hudak

You’re in high school and know you want to go to beauty school. It’s your dream. If you could, you’d just snap your fingers and transport from high school and become a cosmetologist. Unfortunately, we all know that can’t happen. You need your high school diploma or GED to enter beauty school. So, since you are in high school, why not make the best of it? Think of high school as preparation for your beauty school classes. With that in mind, here are the top three high school subjects that will prepare you for beauty school.

3. Art.

You already have a creative side, so for now, channel that creativity into your art classes. Learn all you can about colors and their relationships. When you formulate a haircolor, you will need to know about the color wheel. When you are deciding a color that will compliment your Guest’s skin tone, you’ll need to know about warm and cool colors. Enjoy your creative outlet and at the same time learn the theory behind art.

2. English.

Communication is crucial to any stylist’s success, so English ranks second on this list. You know that speech that your teacher is making you do? That speech will prepare you to work with your salon Guests. Cosmetologists who know how to read their Guests verbal and nonverbal communication so that they are in a position to give their Guests the styles they want. Asking the right questions, clarifying, suggesting, listening….the list of communication techniques that cosmetologists use are seemingly endless!

1. Biology.

Yes, biology. This may not have been your first guess – it most likely isn’t most people’s first thought when they think of beauty school.  But, what most people don’t realize is the amount of anatomy a cosmetologist needs to perform Guest services. Haircuts, facials, pedicures – they all require knowledge of the body. Pedicures involve feet massage. You’ll need to know the muscles and their location to give the best massage. Facials also involve massage – and with all the nerves running to and from a head, you’ll need to know the best places to perform each massage technique. To give your Guest a great haircut, you’ll need to really know his or her facial features, which bones are prominent, where the nape is located…and while you won’t discuss biological definitions during a service, you’ll automatically consider these to give your Guest a great look.

So, the next time you walk into your high school class or open your textbook, instead of dreading the next subject, keep an open mind. Cosmetologists have such a large skill set that most likely you will use what you are learning in class. And just think of how much easier beauty school will be if you ace anatomy!
