Paying for Cosmetology School

by Catherine Nessa

One of the most valuable things in life is a great education. A great education can bring you success, happiness, and a sense of accomplishment. It can take you around the world to places you’ve only dreamed of. The catch? It costs money.

If you’ve been thinking about going to cosmetology school, you may be worrying about the cost and whether or not you can afford school. Cost is something all students worry about, whether it’s cosmetology school, trade school or college. The good news is that there are options available to help you pay for your education. When planning and budgeting the cost, there are a few things to consider.

Options to help pay for beauty school tuition:

Scholarships – Do not need to be repaid
Grants – Do not need to be repaid – there are several types and options
Loans –  Borrowed money that must be repaid

For more information on Scholarships and Grants, see our Financial Aid page. Most payment plans are determined by how a loan in set up and structured.

Scholarships & Grants

Cosmetology students are also eligible for scholarships and grants. The advantage of a scholarship is that it is given to you. It is literally free money. You will want to talk to your guidance counselor about scholarships that are available in your area. Grants are also an option. Grants, like scholarships, do not need to be paid back.  Typically, local clubs, businesses, non-profit and organizations, such as a Rotary clubs offer grants.

Accreditation

When a school is accredited, it means that it is an independent body regulated by the Department of Education.  An accredited school is audited and the school’s curriculum is regulated to make sure it meets standards. Empire Beauty Schools, for example, are accredited by National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts & Sciences (NAACS). Generally speaking, attending an accredited school is the better choice than going to one that is not accredited. A main reason for this is because only accredited schools can offer government assisted financial aid. Financial aid is a government loan that you pay back after you’ve completed your schooling. Because financial aid can seem complicated, wehave Career Planning Specialists at Empire who help students navigate the process.

The Bottom Line

Cosmetology school is affordable. But you do need to research your options and plan accordingly. There is an abundance of information online about cosmetology school. Once you’ve chosen which school to attend, you will be able to find information about cost and payment options on the school’s website. Schools like Empire usually have someone who is specifically designated to help students through the financial process. With a little financial research and planning, a high quality cosmetology education is right around the corner. Good luck!
