This Is A Business, YOUR Business

by Brooke Burns

When students start beauty school, they are taken by surprise by the business of cosmetology. If you want to own or manage a salon, or even become a freelance stylist, you’ll need to know some business skills.

Question some of the reasons why you wanted to be a part of this trade.

1. Did it include setting your own hours, prices, and the days of the week you work?

2. Did it simply narrow down to working for yourself?

If so, then you are in business for yourself!

These learned tips of business may include marketing, networking, salon management, business methods, customer service, professional ethics, appointment booking, and the current state laws. The greatest thing about learning business skills is that they are applicable everywhere!

When searching for a school, I strongly urge future professionals to inquire about what business skills are taught. When searching for your first salon, inquire about management opportunities, areas for rising within the company, extra classes and training offered.

Always be up for a challenge, take on more than what is expected and remove yourself from your comfort level to grow daily.

Reading about the success of other business owners/ entrepreneurs is also key to getting the advantage over the stylist next to you. Books that I recommend are as follows: Cosmetologist, Ready,Set,Go!, Cosmetology School Graduate:Book 1: All about Business, A Hairdressers Guide to Success, and The Reluctant Entrepreneur: Turning Dreams into Profits

These are just a few books that guided me to decide that cosmetology and the beauty industry would be my life and my business of expertise.

Taking classes at a local community college in business, accounting, and management will also be HUGE in return rewards for you. The modern day stylist cannot simply be creative, expressive, and artistic. We, as a group of extreme talent, but incorporate both our right and left brain skills to not only survive but to succeed. I once read a quote that fits perfectly:

“Hustle so hard that one day you won’t have to introduce yourself.”

What books have you read that apply to bettering yourself as a business owner or inspired you to work for yourself? What methods of networking, marketing, salon management, etc. are best practices for you?
