Inspiration. Commitment. Passion. How Do You Keep Your Eyes On The Prize?

by Brooke Burns

Find the busiest salon in town and work as many hours as you can. Just because you received your diploma and license does not mean you have game. You will stay connected to the client if you’re growing verbal/ communication skills. You’ll be more team focused at work if you’re taking or teaching classes to help grow with your coworkers. Learn a new style, hair color technique, eyeshadow design, nail art, etc.

Dedication is defined as the state of being committed to doing a particular task effectively and efficiently.

Take your skill, education, and craft to become the professional so dedicated and committed, that one day, you will have a dedication in your honor. Commitment can be expressed as a kind of an emotional attachment towards something. Set goals/ tasks each day for yourself, professionally and personally. I find writing whatever “it” is, it’ll be more of a priority in my day if “it’s” out there, written down. This objective, my promise to myself, is made public in a way and staring at me on my fridge.

Become emotionally involved in your work, your family, your friends, and your life. Most of us don’t have problems becoming emotionally attached or involved in our personal relationships. However, a lot of us seem to go cold on the professional front. Each year, I set goals. Each month those goals are grouped into short-term goals, each day one is written on the fridge, on my dry erase board. You can do this every day. This is a way to stay focused on your commitment; dry-erase just helps with keeping the options open on the dedication.

I dedicate and commit myself to books I want to read, new ideas I want to hear, exercises I want to achieve, yard projects I want to try, and professional growth I want to read and apply for myself. Encore Effect by Mark Sandborn is an extremely wonderful page turner I’m currently reading; TEDTalks are also huge for my inspiration and new ideas. All in all, if you are truly passionate about this industry, you’ll never want to do anything else.
