Heart-Shaped Faces: The Best Styles, Cuts and Color

by Lauryn Salzwedel

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of a beautiful heart-shaped face are the fabulous sculpted cheekbones.   Can we just all take a moment to appreciate this fierce feature? If you have a heart-shaped face, also known as the inverted triangle shape, and you are looking to flatter your already awesome face shape, the goal will be to create length, add fullness to the jaw and chin area, and avoid creating any more width on the forehead.  Here are different ways to flatter your face shape with any length hair style.

WAVES

Loose, flowing waves soften angles on the bottom of the face. You can balance out the face with long, side-swept bangs that draw attention down and towards the eyes. The shortest pieces of your bangs should meet your face at the arch of your brow; the longest pieces should near the outer corners of the eyes.

LOW FREQUENCY

Curling just the bottom half of your hair will create fullness that enhances a heart-shaped face.

CENTER OF ATTENTION

Long hair parted in the center looks good on a heart-shaped face by creating two vertical lines that will make the face appear longer.

FACE-FRAMING BOB

A bob that ends right underneath your chin or jawline will frame your heart-shaped face beautifully.  It accentuates your cheekbones.  The slight angle of a bob gives it a modern feel without drawing too much attention to the chin. Chin-length bobs are great for your face shape, just make sure the ends are a bit tapered. Side-swept bangs will also look gorgeous with your face shape.

CHEEKY PIXIE

This bold, short cut is perfect for heart-shaped faces. It shows off your cheeks without adding unnecessary width to the top of the head. The texture on the top of your head makes your overall face shape appear longer. If you have a heart-shaped face, you pretty much own the pixie cut.  Not everyone can get away with a pixie. The cut can make a square face look more square and a long face look even more oblong.

OMBRE DIMENSIONS

Hair color can be used to distribute weight and balance facial features. The darker section of the ombre technique will make the top of your head appear narrower, while the lighter section will make the bottom of the face look fuller- exactly what a heart-shaped faced needs for perfect balance.

Are there any styles a heart-shaped faces should avoid?

Be careful adding too much height at the crown of your head, especially avoid having your hair piled on top of your head. A better look would be to emphasize fullness at the sides of your head. Slicked-back hair shows off the face too much. You rarely see Jennifer Aniston with her hair slicked back, and it’s for a reason.  The secret is to balance your chin, making sure to avoid styles that are top-heavy.

If you are unsure of your face shape, just ask!  You will love what choosing the right cut, style, or even hair color for your face shape can do.
