As a cosmetologist, your daily routine will focus on beautifying and maintaining the health of hair, skin, and nails. Licensed cosmetologists work in a diverse field, which means many cosmetologists specialize in specific areas.
There are a variety of areas for a cosmetologist to focus on, including hair design, esthetics, nail technology, permanent makeup, or clerical duties. Since cosmetologists have diverse skill sets, they can work in diverse environments. Places they may work are spas, salons, beauty departments for pharmacies/stores, beauty product companies, or freelance work.
Here are examples of job duties:
- Inspect and analyze hair, scalp, and skin to recommend services or treatment.
- Chemically change hair texture.
- Shampoo, color, lighten, and condition hair.
- Clean and disinfect all tools and work areas.
- Receive payments from clients.
- Makeup analysis.
- Advise clients about nail and skin care for hands and feet.
- Evaluate clients’ skin condition and appearance.
- Remove unwanted hair, using wax, lasers, or other approved treatments.
