Being a Cosmetologist: Is it a real job?

by Empire Beauty School

People often think that being a cosmetologist is an easy job or maybe it doesn’t challenge the mind enough.  Some may even believe it’s not a “real job”.  It’s just cutting and styling hair, right? How hard can it be??

Being a cosmetologist requires many job skills other than just cutting hair. Just like going to a college or a trade school for other careers, you have to go to beauty school to learn the proper techniques for cutting, coloring, and styling hair as well as makeup, nails, and skincare. Some may say you will learn more chemistry and math going to beauty school than most learn during four years of college. Why do you ask? Coloring and bleaching someone’s hair requires the use of chemicals. A cosmetologist has to understand and know the right combination of these chemicals. Otherwise, it is the difference between healthy hair and damaged hair.

A cosmetologist also requires excellent customer service skills. Greet your customers with a warm welcome and keep a nice conversation. Make sure you explain your products and services clearly. Listen carefully to your clients and their requests to help you determine which service is needed. You don’t want to cut off 3 inches of hair when the customer only wanted 1 inch cut off. Good service equals happy and repeated customers.

Being a successful cosmetologist also requires having some business skills. You need to be able to market yourself and your services and manage your time accordingly to get clients in and out of your chair while giving them quality services. Also, some sales may be required – you want to make sure they book another appointment, upgrade their next service, and purchase the proper take-home products.

So if someone says being a cosmetologist is just about cutting hair – you can mention you are a chemist, customer service rep, marketer, sales rep, and business manager. But most of all, it’s a career that lets you be creative and artistic while making someone feel good about themself, and that is rewarding. It’s a career where you will ‘Love what you do’!

Has someone ever told you cosmetology was not a real job? How did you respond to them?
