They always say, “the eyes have it,” but the beauty trends of 2012 are focusing down. Past seasons have shown us smokey eyes, spider lashes, winged and colored liners paired with a soft glossy lip. While gloss will always be in the beauty professionals arsenal, lipstick is back with a vengance in colors that are anything but shy.
The Bold Lip: A precise red lip was on the mouth of every star this year. Paired with natural looking skin, fuller brows, and fluttery lashes this look is not going away any time soon. This look is deceptively simple as lips need to be meticulously lined and filled in with a lip brush. Lip liner is a must for this look because super-pigmented lipsticks need an anchor or they will travel all over your face and make you look like a baby clown. Touch-ups are a must as well. Although there are a lot of long-wearing lipsticks on the market- this look still is a little moist. And really, is there anything more glamorous than whipping out a beautiful compact and touching up your lips? Embrace your inner Marilyn!
The Stain: Gucci’s fall 2012 runway show gave us an irresistable deepberry-stained lip with an ethereal face and fuller brow. While the red lip is Marilyn, this look is definitely for the Garbo’s of the group. This lip trend is decidedly matte and wears well through the day. You want to make sure your lips are properly moisturized and exfoliated or you will look like you’ve been gnawing on yourself. With a look this dramatic you will want to keep everything else simple…too much eyeliner and you are in Dark Shadows territory (seriously…could Depp’s make-up be more “off”?). Of course, if you are feeling a little True Blood, a bold wing of liquid liner on the top lid can make you look like the vampiest of all vampires.
Ombre: Yep, the ombre trend has gone lip-side. The beauty blogosphere has shown us some of the most incredible gradation of lip colors. This look is amazing for the fashion-forward set; however, with the amount of time I spend chattering it would be a gloppy mess in under 10 minutes. Now, every beauty professional knows that a lighter color in the center of the lips is the way to create an amazing pout. So, a precisely lined and filled lip with a burst of metallic color in the center is the way to bring this look to the masses. With the ombre lip you will have the near occasion for the dreaded “ring around the lips” lipliner look, so you have to stay on it. ( I’ll tell you what you want, what you really, really, want- at one time I wore purple lipliner with silver lipstick…the look was very Spice World.) In fact, fill the entire lip in with a nude liner first to prime the other colors. This look is labor intensive, but so modern and cool the repeated trips to the mirror are worth it!
