What is an Esthetician?

An esthetician is a state-licensed skin care specialist who evaluates the treatment of a client’s skin, determines which treatments are best for enhancing their appearance, and administers the treatments. They receive training to perform services including facials, microdermabrasion, hair removal, chemical peels, and body treatments. 

JOB OUTLOOK

According to the U.S. Bureau Labor of Statistics, the employment of skincare specialists is projected to grow 9% from 2022 to 2032. This percentage is much faster than the average for all occupations. An average of 12,400 openings for this career are projected each year, over the next decade. 

Estheticians create a relaxing environment, working one-on-one with clients to perform procedures that benefit the skin. These include maintaining the skin’s health and wellness, improving the overall appearance, and analyzing skincare needs to provide treatment accordingly. Estheticians work on all parts of the body.

There are a variety of careers for an esthetician such as a skincare specialist, beauty business owner, salesperson, esthetician instructor, medical esthetician, make-up artist, and spa manager. 

TRAINING

In all 50 states, estheticians require licensure. The first step of becoming an esthetician is specialized training at an Esthetics school, or a cosmetology school with skin care specialist training programs, Empire Beauty School. Training to become an esthetician usually takes an average of 600 hours in most states, but this does vary from state to state. Students complete skin care training with experienced instructors by studying theory through textbook learning and in-class lectures, then practicing the techniques on mannequins and fellow students in the classroom, and later in your program, on real clients in a student salon or spa setting.

In our program, there is also training about safety and sanitation. Students are expected to know and follow state laws for safety procedures in the salon setting. Once you’ve completed your training at the school, you will then need to take (and pass) the state licensing exam.

SERVICES

Estheticians have the freedom to specialize in areas of skincare that they are most interested in. As an esthetician, you have flexibility in your career in choosing where you want to work, and what hours, and can be your own boss. 

In your training program, you will have the opportunity to learn the below concepts. If there is an area of esthetics you would like more experience in, you may be able to become certified in it.

• Facials: deep cleansing, facial steam, exfoliating treatment, mask, and moisturizer or serum. 
• Extractions, removing blackheads from skin. 
• LED Light Therapy. 
• Microdermabrasion: benefits include softer skin, fewer fine lines, and smaller pores.
• Chemical Peels to rapidly exfoliate the skin to give it a healthy glow.
• Body wraps, masks, and scrubs.
• Hair Removal including waxing, tweezing, threading, and laser hair removal. 
• Makeup Application.
