5 Things Hair Stylists Must Do Every Day

by Katie Schenk

While you’re in cosmetology school, your days are much more structured than they will be when you’re working as a stylist. In school, you have class at certain times, probably take breaks and head to bed at usual times. Becoming a licensed stylist in a busy salon will certainly change some of your routines.

However, it’s never too early to set great habits, focusing on the things you’ll need to do every day after you secure your license and land your first job.

Look at Your Appointment Book

Hopefully, you or someone else from the salon has called your clients to confirm their appointments for the day, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore your schedule. Get into the habit of checking all your appointments and preparing for each client accordingly.

If you know someone is likely to be late, plan for it. Take a look for the color you need to apply for another client. You might also plan when you can sit for a moment and enjoy your lunch.

Clean and Sanitize Your Station

This is a continuous process, as you’re probably learning in school, but you’ll need to spend a few times every morning cleaning and sanitizing your station. Even if you did it before leaving the night before, you never know if someone sat in your chair chatting with the late client of one of your colleagues.

Prep for a Busy Day

There are a lot of ways to prepare for the day. Take some time to stretch, especially your legs. You may not think you need it, but it will help to manage the strain they take and prevent injuries.

And, you may want to take a few minutes to search for local sales or new restaurant openings,  that your clients may enjoy. This gives you plenty to talk about with all your clients, regardless of their interests.

Ask a Lot of Questions

You may have worked with the same client for years, but you shouldn’t stop asking questions. Sure, you’ll need to ask more when a new client sits in your chair, but you don’t stop.  Changes to your client’s life will impact his or her ability to care for their hair. A new job may inspire you to recommend more expensive products while a new baby in the home may prompt you to propose a hair style that is easier to maintain.

Smile, Smile, Smile

A welcoming smile will make your clients happy to see you. No matter what kind of a day you’re having or the amount of work a client needs, a big smile will always make a difference – to your customers and to you. Start smiling now and you won’t even need to think about it when you start working.
